Kotaro Maetani

For the Kama City Residency Biennale, Kotaro Maetani will create various camera obscuras using Japanese Washi paper, capturing the special light in Kama City. He will also build a large wooden structure to house his immersive light installation.

The concept of ‘focus’ is one of the most important elements in his works. Though videos and the other kinds of images are generally made up of “focused images”, cameras have larger range of light in the out-of-focus regions than in focused region. He strongly believes that the purity of light exists in this region.
